What is Point of sale (POS)?

Also called POS, POS system

A point of sale system is the software and hardware used to take orders, calculate bills, record payments and report on sales. In hospitality it usually also connects the kitchen, tables, stock and staff.

The term originally meant the till itself. In practice a modern restaurant POS is an operating system for the venue: order entry, kitchen routing, billing, payment recording, inventory and reporting in one flow.

Recording a payment is not the same as processing one. Many POS products, MinimalPOS included, record which method was used against the bill while the money moves through a separate payment provider.
